San Jose, California-- The hard truths of love and loss are explored in the musical ”The Last Five Years” making its San Jose premiere at Theater on San Pedro Square May 23–June 1, 2014.

Set in New York City, ”The Last Five Years” chronicles the relationship between novelist Jamie (played by David Jackson) and struggling actress Cathy (played by Catherine Brady) in the early 1990s. Today’s social media and smart phones are notably absent from this twenty-something romance. What remains are the very recognizable joys and struggles of modern love.

Told almost completely in song, “The Last Five Years” explores the universal highs and lows in young adult relationships; it is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Cathy’s side of the story unfolds backwards in time, starting at the end of their life together. In contrast, Jamie conveys his perspective on the very same time period beginning with their first date and moving forward.

The play provokes thoughtful reflection on our own unforgettable moments. Showcasing contemporary music, the score encompasses several genres played by a purely‐acoustic live orchestra under the exemplary musical direction of Amie Jan. The humor is by turns playful and profound, but always entertaining.
