MAY 23—JUNE 1  ï»¿The Last 5 Years

The hard truths of love and loss are explored in the musical THE LAST FIVE YEARS. Set in New York City, THE LAST FIVE YEARS chronicles the relationship between novelist Jamie (David Jackson) and struggling actress Cathy (Catherine Brady) in the early 1990s. Today’s social media and smart phones are notably absent from this twenty-something romance—what remains are the very recognizable joys & struggles of modern love.

Told almost completely in song, THE LAST FIVE YEARS explores the universal highs and lows in young adult relationships; it is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Cathy’s side of the story unfolds backwards in time, starting from the end of their life together. Meanwhile, Jamie conveys his perspective on the very same time period beginning with their first date and moving forward. It’s sure to provoke thoughtful reflection on unforgettable moments.

Showcasing contemporary music, the score encompasses several genres played by a purely-acoustic live orchestra under the musical direction of Amie Jan. The humor is by turns playful and profound, but always entertaining.

This beloved alternative musical will be performed in the intimate setting of Theater on San Pedro Square in San Jose, CA, May 23–June 1, 2014. With a film version coming later this year (starring Anna Kendrick & Jeremy Jordan), it’s a prime time to experience The Last Five Years onstage as it was originally intended.

Director & Founder Nancy McClymont, M.S.(a counselor and arts educator) combines her fascination with relationships and her love of theater in this surprisingly honest musical. Vocal direction is provided by Linda Middlebusher, so important for this demanding score. The scenic designer is Jim Culley who brings a unique point of view to the production table.
